It’s a good idea to put a coat of wax on the rim of the drum before you apply a new head. The wax will protect the wood from the moisture left on the skin from soaking and will prevent the skins from sticking to the wood.

Hey Shorty,
ReplyDeleteThis is an important step for sure. What type of wax do you prefer to use? Often I use a large chunk of beeswax from Southern Africa. It works wonderful. An African peformer in town suggests Palm Oil on the top. This has worked nicely too. If covered well, the drum head gets a stain from the Palm Oil around the edges. I don't find this troubling and it makes the drum a bit more noticeable. The head has set perfectly and the drum rarely needs tuning knots. What do you think?
